1. Melburnians are not that ethnically oriented. We move around too much. There are a few low housing cost suburbs were some new settlers start, but within a few years they move on. There is just no suburb that has a predominate ethic concentration. It is mix, mix. With a 1/3 of families having someone born overseas, what could you expect?
2. Crown Casino is a rubbish food court. As most shopping mall type places. But a few trams stops in any direction takes you to a diverse range of scrumptious and cheap eateries. Check the Age (newspaper) Cheap Eats guide for the most recent advice.
3. Yes, The Press Club and spin off Hellenic Republic are superb. But you have to make a reservation. But there are other great places too. You're best to ask a local for recommendations.
4. Puffing Billy; when yes if you’re dating with kids. Try the Blues Train at Queenscliff for more adult fun. There are actually 4 vintage trains running in various parts of Melbourne.
5. Theatre; yes, there are always big productions in town. But that is not where it is at. Check the Age (newspaper) Friday gig guide for a myriad of plays, musicals, dances, bands (often playing at pubs with no entry fee) Avoid city discos/ night clubs; disappointing music, over priced drinks and entry fees.
6. While public transport is safe and inexpensive; ie, buy a 2 hour or all day MET ticket and you can jump on/off any bus, tram, train in the period as much as you need. However, toward outer suburbs they are less frequent, and don't connect well.
7. Melbourne is built on a mud flat so easy to cycle around, and bikes trails are getting better all the time. The Bayside trail is very popular, and a great place to take or even met that someone.
8. Yes, Melbourne boasts almost every sporting code; our own Aussie rules football (fast paced, dramatic), soccer, tennis, baseball, rugby, cricket, and even grid-iron!
9. But more folk attends clubs, societies and galleries than sport. To find these check out local Council directories, tourist offices, Internet sites, like METUP or just look at notices in any coffee shop.
10. Yes, Fringe Festival to the Food and Wine Festival. And spring racing carnival, Arts Festival, Film Festival. But a must do is the Comedy Festival help from Easter every year.
11. Finally, just hang out at the City Square (not so much a square but a collection of art establishments, cafe, cinemas, with no line perpendicular to another) and watch people, chat with people, generally hang out. We're friendly folk.

You are so right! I feel like I've been there already, just by reading your eloquent post!

I think you must have accidentally left out 2 very important points -
1. Mebourne was the first official capital and to this day all the residents remain incurable snobs.
2. Melbourne is a city of gold-diggers (being in close proximity to Ballarat, of course).

Where is the right smilie when I need it most?

"Mebourne was the first official capital and to this day all the residents remain incurable snobs."
Well, yes. We are snobs.
I note IcecreamMoon that you hail from Sydney. The review of the Harbour town was pathetic. While I'd never live there, it is great to visit. The review barely touched the neat places tucked around CBD. I've often taken my sons for a weekend (come up by train overnight or a cheap flight). Spend the day on ferry, Manly beach, Darling harbour, strolling around the bridge. And walking around the Cross is great entertainment. The weird, strange and outrageous. The weathers always fantastic no matter what time of the year.
And who would recommend StarCity! So Tinsley.

Waking around the Cross with you sons is what you find entertaining?

Oh well, to each his own... as long the as the friendly folk from Mebourne limit themselves to strolling around the bridge without going under, our two great cities should be able to live in (e)harmony.

I'm actually a big fan of Melbourne myself. Feels homey and comfortable to me, and therefore very romantic!

I like visiting Melbourne. All the cabs are yellow, so easy to recognise them! I like Prahran Street best for shopping ... window shopping! I do not like the right hook turn when driving and I was struck by how clean the City is compared to Sydney. Crown Casino - does it still have those huge flame things happening?

Do you relaise how insulting this is to blokes, and you've ust applied it to our entire city! We'd like to think we're exciting; even if only a bit.

Oh, the Crown Casinoflame things - they'd not done it for years. I thiught it their guesture to globale waming, or not to care folk post 9/11 But I noticed going a few weeks back. But not up full.

Well, please accept my apologies, on behalf of the entire male population of Melbourne, for this terrible insult caused by one female liking Mebourne for one of its best known qualities - it's been voted as one of the best cities to live in the world a number of times, so there must be something comfortable about it...

Then again, I must be still a child in my mind - I happen to love the Puffing Billy ride through the Dandenongs. But then the adult in me takes over and I love to visit the Yarra Valley next - Domain Chandon and Chateau Yering in particular.

I can leave the Crown though - not much into casinos myself, but there are certainly some good restaurants in and around it.

And let me apologise in advance, just in case any of the above somehow also offends your fine male sensibilities!

Love the cabs too - much easier to locate than in Sydney, where they can be any color...

But did you really not find Sydney clean? I'm quite surprised by this comment because most visitors say quite the opposite - they are surprised how clean it is, for a city of its size. Unless you visited during New Years or some other special event, of course...

Oh, I'll get over it. You know our sesistive male egos are. But Pulling Billy is neat. My dad took use there many times. Hanging your feet out the windows as child was so cool. Love the smoke and steam. I've taken my own sons there too. I know the do steam train trips in Sydeny from Central station, but is there anything like puffing billy?
