Where I live, Veterans Day is important. Our 3 local cities (Munford, Atoka, and Covington) pay public tribute at the town halls with "fields of flags" - about 30 American flags on poles in the ground. And American flags are hung on every available power-line pole in this area (we are near a Naval base.) I salute you, miltary men and women.

I live in the Washington, DC, area. I would say that Veteran's Day (as we call it here) is observed, but not necessarily a big deal. There are a few events around town at the various military memorials and at Arlington Cemetary (and it's a work holiday for many), but we don't have a parade or anything like that.

I'll take some time, though, to remember especially a young soldier I supported who was killed in Iraq a couple of years ago, and the husband of a friend who was killed in Afghanistan last year. And, I remember my ancestors who fought in the Civil War;there area bunch about whom I've learned quite a bit. My gggrandfather was awarded a Medal of Honor for his role in saving his regiment from capture or destruction by Confederate troops. His two older brothers, as well as his younger brother, also served in the war--one dying as the result of wounds suffered at the Battle of Petersburg. Two of their first cousins were also killed--one in battle, and one by a sniper while he sat under a tree reading a book. Finally, theiruncle was an officer in the famous 20th Maine and participated in the Battle of Gettysburg (among many others, of course, but that was a biggie!).

I have living veterans to remember as well, of course. Foremost, my Dad is a WWII vet, coming out of that conflict with a Purple Heart (his brothers all served, too). But, I've also gotten to know quite a few young troops who have served in Iraq and/or Afghanistan, so I remember them as well (I have one friend who is now on his third deployment to Iraq).And, there isanother soldier and his family who have somehow become like family, so they are on the list, too.

I'llbe spending at least part of the day volunteering for a troop support organization in which I've been active over the last few years (Books for Soldiers). We've got a booth at a local healthcare conference so we caninform people about the program (and maybe solicit some donations, too). I was over there on Sunday and we had some good traffic by our table;hopefully people will be even more inclined to stop by on Veteran's Day!

I know Veterans Day honors those who are or have served and that Memorial Day is when those killed are honored however, I just wanted to post this anyway =0P

A lot of peope don't know this but there actually are lyrics to Taps.

Taps
Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, from the hills, from the sky;
All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.

Fading light, dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright.
From afar, drawing nigh, falls the night.

Thanks and praise, for our days,
'Neath the sun, 'neath the stars, neath the sky;
As we go, this we know, God is nigh.

Sun has set, shadows come,
Time has fled, Scouts must go to their beds
Always true to the promise that they made.

While the light fades from sight,
And the stars gleaming rays softly send,
To thy hands we our souls, Lord, commend.

I was just reading a bit on the history of the day and thought I would share the following.

From President Wilson's remarks at the first commemoration of Armistice Day:

"To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

And, from the proclamation in 1954 that changed the name to Veteran's Day:

"Now, Therefore, I, Dwight D. Eisenhower, President of the United States of America, do hereby call upon all of our citizens to observe Thursday, November 11, 1954, as Veterans Day. On that day let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain."

Just bumping up a Veteran's Day thread (even though it clearly doesn't belong in the dating forum unless we start talking about dating veterans!).

How about if you date a current member of the military?
