So last Wednesday I met this great guy while waiting for a train. We talked for a long time. By the time the train came I had one stop till I was home. From our conversation, I knew that both of us had dead cell phones and we were too engaged in conversation, I didn't have the balls to ask his number.

I was bummed, but decided to give it a chance and write a missed connection on Craigslist. And just like that, two days he (the real guy) wrote back, so enthused he saw the post and said he really wanted to ask my number but mentioned that it was tough without a charged phone.

I replied to his email on Friday and ended the message with my number. It's now Tuesday night, and no word from him. What happened? Should I give up on this?

I'd give up, yes.

At best, if you do hear, push for a meeting.

Although, fate may smile on your mutual inability to do anything so easy as take a pencil and maybe write a phone number or even - gasp! - remember one (or carve it in your arm with a pocketknife ... hey, I was young and dumb once!)

Happily, the same person probably takes the same train to the same station every day, so there is that, too.

I have heard rumors that people used to use something called a "pencil" and wrote phone numbers down on something else called "a piece of paper"...

The most amazing part of this story is that you knew to post on Craigslist, and he knew to check.

I just learned something. Go figure.

he wrote in his email that someone saw the post on CL and asked if it was about him

and for the record, I lose pens ALL the time, albeit this was the perfect time to not have one

And there were no other people on the train from whom you could have borrowed a pen? You didn't have a lipstick? Or an eyeliner?

I give you points for posting in missed connections on Craigslist, but remember, this is not like the movies, where you can write your name in a used book, then years later the guy from the train will buy the book and track you down because he just couldn't get over you... (That's basically the plot of Serendipity, if you haven't seen it).

oh I know the movie, but the issue at hand is whether I should assume he won't bother calling, now that he has my number (and he said he wished he asked -and- replied back asking me questions, etc.)

funny thing is, once I saw his email I did a google search on his name (seriously, inquiring minds want to know) and found out that he was in the same grad school class as a friend, and said friend knows him quite well

anyway, the thought crossed my mind to ask my friend for real scoop on whether the guy is a jerk
