I didn't mean to associate these on an individual basis. My observation is more with regard to the more general progression of a society, such as people in the U.S. as opposed to those in poorer countries that I've lived in or visited. I'm not opposed to greater education and economic means....it there just seem to be some negative side effects of these. Hopefully this will change at some point in the future.
Again this doesn't jibe with my experience. To be fair though I've visited a number of countries but never actually lived in any of them.

I see a stark contrast between the 70s and the 80s and beyond. The 80s became very "me" focused as affluence increased.

As American culture infiltrates other countries (ala MTV etc) it pollutes the thinking of those people too.

Its the difference between surviving and saturation in material wealth. That is what I have seen in contrasting the poorer countries I have visited to the US.

Then we either have very different perceptions or have visited/lived in different countries.

That's part of why I enjoy being around people who are living very simple lives, such as those from poorer countries. They're focused on surviving rather than gratifying their ego. Though, of course it would be preferable if they could have more economic security. That saturation in wealth, focusing on the frivolities of life (conspicuous consumption, keeping up with the Joneses etc.) and extreme focus on satisfying one's own ego is what turns me off about a lot of people from wealthier parts of the world (including the U.S.).
