I'm trying online dating, but I don't want to put all my eggs in that basket. I'd also like to meet people in person to add to my chances of meeting people. I'm 28. I'm a computer programmer that's a bit of a combo. I'm nerdy. I like computers and I like to learn. I also like sports hanging out, and cold beers. What's the best place for someone like me to meet people?

Try to join one of those meet up groups...but don't focus on romantic part of it...just think of it as another venue to do something with other people, so you don't psyche yourself out. I've heard good things about it.

I live outside of Detroit are you aware of any meetup groups in the area. I tried meetup.com with not a lot of success. Though I may try it again. Any suggestion is appreciated.

Are you interested in geek-girls ?

If so, licensed internet cafes, the type which have a bar, and in some cases food service as well, might offer the opportunity to address two interests at the same time. A like minded individual may attend for similar reasons. Some might be tomboyish ?

Internet cafe's could work. Generally, I like geeks. Most of them are nice, down-to-earth people. I'd have to make sure to find a place that isn't occupied by too many of the sort of geek that regards you as philistine because you interests outside comics, computers, and sci-fi. Thanks for the advice.

What's the best way to find licensed internet cafes? Google yielded some results. Is there a particular site that out that is good at locating them?

I would use a telephone directory and go on a mission to look at the promising listings, but I am still in analog. There's nothing like a mission every once in a while.

IT conventions in the nearest major city, or in Vegas, maybe? You can always put your skills to work, volunteer for a non-profit organization that deals with a second interest you have, such as animal rights or the environment, or fundraising for public television. All these venues attract the "brain heavy" BTW, if you haven't heard, a lot women (myself included) find smart guys hot, (See how that tv show "Chuck" took off?) and a smart guy with a heart? Doubly so.
