In some of these threads the terms are used repeatedly as though there was a generally acceptable definition.

If so, how is "successful woman" or "successful man" defined for these discussions?

Is "success" measured in wealth, possessions or social status (or degrees, employment, or stress endurance)? Is a female CEO, by definition, a "successful woman"? Is a male CEO a "successful man"?

If a person of either gender decides to forgo wealth and status in favor of following a path that is more rewarding to them personally (and perhaps more "earthy"), are they defined as "less successful" in life?

It almost appears as though success is defined primarily in terms of income or wealth or status. Are there alternative measures of success that are just as valid or more valid?

In my use and understanding of the term, “success” is meant degree of achievement toward objectives.

This could mean wealth, if that is what you seek, but it could be “successfully completed my doctorate,” or “opened my first restaurant.”

In the absence of specificity, I understand the term to refer to money, with socially prominent careers often implied.

I see more than a few profiles, where women state her partner “must be successful.” It does not leave much to the imagination.

For me, success is not necessarily tied to financial wealth (it can be, but it's not necessary). If someone has achieved important life goals (e.g., eduction, business, interpersonal) -- especially in the face of obstacles -- then that's a measure of success. If someone is happy in their work and personal life, then that is a measure of success. If someone is fabulously wealthy and personally miserable, that is not a sign of success in my book.

It's very easy to measure success by the size of someone's pocketbook; more difficult using some of the other parameters.

I would agree with D_Lion, though, that "In the absence of specificity, I understand the term to refer to money, with socially prominent careers often implied."

That's just not how I measure it myself.

A successful man is one who makes more money than his wife can spend.

A successful woman is one who can find such a man.

I have to agree as written. Taking it further, I understand being successful to mean that the hard times have become easier to overcome, life has progressed beyond the day to day struggle for mere survival, that a person is happy with themselves, their accomplishments, and the people around them. I know many very unsuccessful millionaires and many very successful poor. I think it would be a good idea if a woman wants a rich man to state it that way. If she doesn't care about that and wants a man at peace with himself, confident, emotionally stable, then she should state that, but to leave it only at "successful" then D_Lions definition must stand. I know when I say I want a successful woman I'm talking about someone who knows and likes herself, is comfortable in her skin and has the mental and emotional capability and the desire to invest of herself in a partnership with a man.

I consider success whenever you have achieved your goals. I consider myself successful in my career, but not in my social life. till I meet my match that I'm engaged to. now I can say that I'm happy now! I own my own company, but I have no college degree.
