Whist a standard military training taught me excellent marksmanship, Ive never had the personal need nor desire for a gun of any type...and have inhabited some of the most dangerous places on earth...it was a very different story for my parents and grandparents who needed to put food on the table and hunted rabbits, pheasant, woodpidgeon and grouse.. This is a warrior nation obsessed with violence in every form ..its high time people grew up ..but with such an abundance of pride in ignorance highly unlikley..

Lets be VERY clear :- Guns have just 2 real purposes.(1)to invoke fear ..(2) to main or Kill...

Why would a mature, intelligent, balanced individual wish to do either?
PS.. for "defence" all one needs is a good brain...Smart,aware people anticipate and avoid conflict.

the guy robbing / beating / raping you or your's - and his buddies (you didn't think he'd be dumb enough to take you on one on one in a fair fight... did you?) - don't care. he and his friends prefer you, their victim, to be unarmed

For “defense” the most important thing is a very high salary / wealth, so that one can afford to live in the best neighborhoods. This, more than anything, reduces one’s risk of violent crime. Not an achievable option for most people.

Sport shooting is a popular hobby, and this is a legitimate purpose for owning firearms as well.

For home defense/fun I have a 12 gauge, .357 revolver, 10/22 rifle (fun gun!), Mini-14, .22 revolver, and another .22 rifle. I agree with irish...the military should go back to .45. 9mm is kinda wimpy. It's not like you need to worry about heavy ammo for a pistol...how much are you going to be shooting it? In an emergency I want a big bullet. Oh well.

Before people laugh at all the .22s... .22 ammo is cheap. So there.

Let's be VERY clear on this point, also. Often individuals who happen to be in law enforcement will run into past "customers." Because most law enforcement officers are mature, intelligent and balanced, they WILL be carrying their weapon on and off duty because sometimes those past customers (who aren't always nice guys) have made threats against the officer and his/her family. So, if the officer is smart and aware, he/she anticipates and ensures that he/she and loved ones go home safely.

Agreed, seen too many police shootouts with 15 rounds from close range missing the suspect. Even in training, low light, siren going and strobe lights shooting paper while tactically moving and being evasive missed a ton of shots. They should almost teach instinctive shooting exclusively because unless you're a sniper with a long gun aim goes out the window.

As for the zombpocolypse... the more rounds the better. But then I do western sword fighting for just that reason. Because "swords don't run out of ammo. "

They're thinking about it... What a huge flippin mess honestly. Supposed to only cost $1 million, ends up at like $6 million for a useless registry.

Don't get me wrong, being a Canadian cop I'm all for a certain amount of gun control. My brothers in blue south of the border have all my respect doing a job for often low pay and really high risk. I just personally believe that there's no place for a civilian owning an assault rifle or machine gun. There's enough nut jobs out there that worrying about nut jobs with 30 rounds+ at a high cyclical rate with bullets that would shred my vest to pieces vs. me with a 12 round Sig... anyways..

The issue is there was no point to the registry. It added a huge fee to a lot of legal gun owners that had been grandfathered in from a long time ago. It was just a money grab for registration fees etc, which ended up costing more than it brought in... a lot more. They didn't anticipate that a lot of old timers who had rifles and shotguns but never used them anymore would just turn them in for destruction. Or bury them in a field in northern Ontario.

On top of that... it serves no purpose as police aren't given that information on a real time basis. If I'm going to a domestic it doesn't pop up on the screen "Caution, registered gun owner." or anything like that... privacy law prevents that. Stupid I know.

The bad guys don't go and register their guns. Only upstanding law abiding citizens...

We don't use anything on a Moose, you hope you're in a car and can drive away quickly. Moose are dangerous scary creatures with a chip on their shoulder and a meaner disposition than a grumpy old man. They're just more likely to get angrier and angrier the more lead you let fly at them... Moose often win in Car vs Moose scenarios.

Moose = Canada's version of M1 Abrams tanks.

Fear the moose!
A .300 WIN Mag. would be a bare minimum for a moose; a .375 H&H mag. would be better.

If you were in the military you would know that what you have stated above is not true. They don't issue soldiers rifles because they are to scare the enemy.

The purpose of the military is to focus and project the force of a nation. Weapons project force over distance. Whether a trooper is shooting a target on the range or an enemy combatant, he/she is projecting force. It's the same concept as when a caveman threw a rock at something. The differences between the rock of a caveman and modern firearms are matters of range, accuracy, and the amount of force that can be brought to bear against a target.

Pot meet kettle... If you were interested in things improving, a less combative tone might facilitate a dialogue and a better understanding.

You really have never been in harm's way. The best defense is a good zip code. By that I mean, not being in bad areas. It's not a guarantee but it does reduce the chances of meeting a person who wants to hurt you and is prepared to do so. However, if you have to go into a bad area (i.e. because your government sends you there or, in a civilian context, you can't afford to move to a nicer neighborhood) having a good mind and situational awareness is part of the answer, but it's not the entire answer. Sometimes you need equipment. If you were in the military, you should know that.

Firearms are tools. They can be used for good or bad. The individual carrying it is the deciding factor.
