I read a lot, and in my job, interact with the public in a way that most people never experience. The waste, stupidity, and lack of personal responsibility in this country are making me sick. How did we come to this ? I will cite 2 examples just for flavor. Comment as you see fit.

Last week we received a 911 call at 4:15 a.m. from a 20yo male complaining of wrist pain. When we arrived on scene he said he couldn't sleep because earlier in the evening he hurt the wrist while having sex and what could we do for him ? The wrist wasn't broken or even bleeding. If you ever wonder why we may arrive late to your burning house or child having a seizure, we get thesetypes of worthless calls allthe time. A large number end up in a $600 ambulance bill picked up by the taxpayers. (that being YOU)

(I'm not complaining about my job, I get up and do what's needed. )

Earlier this year I read about the 5 most frivolous lawsuits of the year. One was of a "lady" that tripped over a pinecone in the parking lot of a state agency and injured her leg. She sued because the parking lot wasn't properly swept, and a jury awarded her thousands of dollars. That makes it even worse...that a group of other people feel you're also entitled to get paid because you can't watch where you're going. Everyone has their hand out and it makes me sick. Does the word "accident" have any meaning anymore ?

Opinions ?

There is a fine line here between personal responsibility and just plain responsibility. I work in a firm that does personal injury and sometimes, your pinecone incident can be misleading without all the relevant details. What if the pinecone had been sticky with sap and did not just get "swept" away. What if the entire walkway was covered with pinecones? Was she an elderly lady that because the pinecone wasn't swept properly, her fall caused more damage to her. A woman who's been actually injured would fetch something more than say a young person who just happened to have his ego bruised. Too many unknown details to know exactly who was at fault.

But you're right about a lot of things about personal responsibility. I had this one lady yell at me because she defaulted on an agreement and it was my fault for not giving her more breaks than i had already did. We gave her at least 5 different breaks, but finally after she was playing us for so long, we got a judgment on her and garnished her bank account. Then she blames me for not honoring the agreement she breached months before without any communication with us. We even gave her a 25% break on the agreement and then she expects us to honor that agreement after she defaulted over and over and over.

Its not personal responsibility, but the entitlement that a lot of people seem to exhibit. Your example of wrist boy is exactly that level of entitlement. He's hurt and in his world, his pain trumps all others. But when he gets that bill, he feels that he doesn't need to pay it, because you SHOULD have been available for call for his problems for free.

You can say that entitlement issue and personal responsibility go hand in hand so to speak.

You're correct. Nobody wants to be responsible for their own actions. They want someone else to blame or clean up their mess. I get to see personal injury lawsuits from the defense side. There are some people who have genuine claims, have really been hurt but I see far too many frivolous claims.

I can't believe someone would call 911 for something so ridiculous! He wasn't the slightest bit embarrassed by that?

One of my favorites is a passenger in a car with a lady with no insurance. The lady rear ends someone and drunk. The passenger wants to make the guy who his drunk lady friend with no insurance hit pay because the lady has no insurance. For some reason, he doesn't want to make his lady friend pay, the REAL person whose responsible.

The poor guy in front was just sitting at a red light and is now having to defend against a lawsuit. Yes, there are a lot of frivilous lawsuits out there. I see them too often as well on the plaintiff side as well. We don't take these. Or try not to.

The only thing that embarassed him was when we told him, in front of his girlfriend, to suck it up and go to bed.

We've had calls for splinters, headaches (very common), constipated, gas pains, bloody noses...name it. Some call like clockwork (we call them frequent fliers) The most frustrating part, is that with other people in the house and cars in the driveway, they still call 911 for minor crap instead ofdriving to the ER or personal doctor. (there is a hospital andER within 10 minutes of any of our stations)

Time is critical for heart attack, stroke, or breathing impaired patients. While we're stuck on these other calls, those patientshave to wait on the next due piece of equipment. The same is true for fire callsand accident victims.

I understand how critical time is. My father had a heart attack at home 2 years ago and I'm very thankful for the EMT's that saved his life.

It is truly amazing how selfish people can be.

It's not just a problem that Americans have. Here in Canada we have a problem with responsibility as well.

I worked for five years as an administrative assistant for the College of Alberta Dental Assistants. Here in Alberta, Dental Assistants have to be licensed to do their jobs. Some dentists will refuse to allow their Assistants to work until they can prove that they have a license to work in Alberta.

The Dental Assistants have to pay a $250 fee each year by November 30th and prove that they've taken enough continuing education courses that year before they can get their licenses renewed. There is a $55 late fee which has to be paid by January 30th. If this is not paid, the Dental Assistant has her license suspended and she has to pay a $380 reinstatement fee.

My supervisor did a report the last year that I worked there (2007) that covered about the last 5 or 6 years. She found out that of the 300 Dental Assistants that had a late fee that year also had a late fee for all of the other 5 or 6 years that she did the report for. In other words, it's always the same people that are late.

Try to figure that one out.

Sorry - have to add a change.

About half of the 300 that were late in 2007 were also late in most of the previous five years.

There are about 4800 Registered Dental Assistants here in Alberta

I did search and rescue for about8 years in the USCGand even though there were many cases of 'wasted effort and resources' due to false alarms and such... one real emergency made it all worth it. Not many things in my life have given me more satisfaction than pulling thatone crying woman off of the buoy and into the boat. And there were many, many similiar instances that always made me forget the jack-a$$es.
