I own both a Mac and PC but the PC's power supply recently died. I've had Macs since before they had internal hardrives (remember the plus). They work for an incredibly long time. My Mac Plus lasted 14 years and I still have the G3 350 I bought to replace it (my son uses it for games and school work). Last year I bought the replacement for the 8 year-old G3, an iMac. I've had virtually no problems with my macs. The PC on the other hand has been like owning a Renault. Constant fixing and maintenance problems that required getting an expert geek in to work on code. All mac problems have been quickly resolved.

Incidentally for you Linux folks. I once had a Sun computer running Linux at work so learned Linux then. Found it easy to use and very stable.

What's open source about Microsoft? Why would anyone support a company that constantly releases software with critical bugs? I've never understood that.

Typical MAC user: writes their novels in Starbucks, votes for Obama, listens to Dave Mathews Band, & smells their own fart. :P

Linux is open source, not Microsoft.

And the answer to your second question is that they've dominated the OS market for a long time, and they're not going away any time soon. People support them because their software works, as well as relatively easy to use.

Again, $900 computer > weaker $2,400 computer.

Therefore PC > Mac.

Simple geometery.

Just to stir this pot a little bit:

When Apple converted to PC-based hardware, I laughed for a month about that. For years, the Mac fanboys kept saying "Mac Is Faster! Mac Is Faster!" Then all of a sudden, they're like, "Oops. Looks like Intel was right!" Now Macs aren't even Macs anymore, they're PCs running a distribution of the Unix-derived FreeBSD operating system.

On a more serious note...

One of the reasons Mac's are such a small percentage of market share is, believe it or not, due to gamers. The same people who play computer games are the ones doing all the IT and software development at their companies. When the boss wants to upgrade computer hardware, these folks naturally reccommend the hardware and OS they know best. Since all the best computer games are released on PC, that gives Bill Gates and Co a huge advantage.

Computer gamers have, in large part, been one of the biggest driving forces in the computer industry for the past 30 years. It's one of those annoying facts that most people who think gaming is for losers likes to ignore.

Mac = Honda. You buy preconfigured machines that offer preconfigured specs that work for a VERY long time.

PC = Ford. You buy a base model that you upgrade until you spend as much as you would have on the mac and it breaks down ALL the time.

Key word is "upgrade." My computer, at nine hundred bucks, is BETTER than a $2,400 iMac. It's got the same specs with a better video card and CPU cooling system. And a better power supply.

If I spend another $1,500 on it, it will blow that iMac away. Even for drawing stuff. I'll have two quad core processors and plenty of other bells and whistles. Or I could just buy an HD TV and plug my computer into it, effectively having a monitor at least 5x larger. And it will be better than that iMac, as it is right now, for basically forever.

Before I purchased this system I had a case I'd built a computer with four years ago and steadily modified since then. It cost me $500 to make then and I've put about $1,200 dollars into it since then over the years if I remember correctly. I had one hard drive fail, the only time the system crashed.

Macs are usually more "stable" because people only use them for about 3 things. A car that you drive to and from work only is probably going to last longer than one you use for off-roading. You can probably get away with less maintenance because you aren't doing much with it. If you drive that Honda all the same places you drive that Ford truck we'll see if it lasts as long as it did before.

Honestly, though, I stick with PCs pretty much because I'm also a gamer. I'll admit it! Macs work great for many people, and that's fine. Just don't ask me to come over and fix your computer =).

I totally agree. I have both, and use each for different purposes. I use the mac most often because I can run Windows on it, but my pc has the advantage of running other software not compatible with mac. They perform equally well, and, although the macs cost more, the tech support (being able to bring it into the Apple store) is much better.

I did get a new machine recently, and I have to say, it's quite awesome!

The specs are: HP Pavilion Elite PC with 2.50 GHz Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q9300 with 6MB L2 Cache, 8 GB of PC2 6400 DDR2 SDRAM, 2 500 GB 7200 RPM SATA hard drives in a RAID 1 setup, NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT Graphics card with 512 MB Dedicated Video Memory, Blu-Ray DVD Player/DVD-CD burner with LightScribe, Wireless LAN b/g/n, Vista Premium 64-bit version. I'm using it to record shows on cable that I want to watch for later, as well as crunching unsolvable chess positions.

Even at what I got, it's cheaper and way more powerful than the $2,400 Mac.
