Thanks Andie is me!

I'd like to clarify an earlier post about a syndrome involving colon inflammation that causes excessive weight gain.

My sole purpose in posting is to combat the notion (very popular with some on this board) that obesity is only caused by eating too much and not getting enough exercise.

This syndrome exists and is more common than most give credit. I hope people will begin to cut heavy women some slack I know I will!

From my preliminary research, ... a cure may be very simple.

Ulcerative Colitis - NHS Choices

it didn't cause weight gain with one of my ex g/f's but the treatment (steroids) did.

so "the obesity is only caused by eating too much and not getting enough exercise" is incorrect but diet/poor exercise is the most often cause.

So, the massive increase in obesity since the advent of industrialization and home automation, and especially since sedantary occupations and idleness, is "medical?"

One might as well argue that wealth is due not to income and spending, but the phases of the moon.

According to article Steve linked 10 in 100,000 get this. So, I will cut some slack to .01% of the obese women.

My son has UC and the worry is NOT about gaining weight whatsoever. It is about absorption and losing weight. The steroids are only taken briefly to get the condition under control. Granted each person will have a different length of time they will need to take steroids, but that part of the drug therapy is not life long. My son only took them for about 3 months before the doctors took him off and now he has been on maintenance meds ever since. The small amount of weight he did gain while on steroids fell off quickly. While he IS 16 (14 at the time of diagnosis and steroid intake) he is not very active. One of the reasons being he was too worn out from the UC to do any physical activities.

I won't disagree that there are many, many people who do gain weight and cannot lose it after taking steroids. I feel for them. But, it is not the only reason and it is not a major reason. I think there are many reasons (lack of education, heredity, poor example set by parents, etc) and to blame it all on one thing or another is naive.

I'm sure if you asked, or even had the chance to view the eating habits of people who are heading towards being overweight, you would see much smaller portions than of those who are currently overweight. It's a gradual process that doesn't happen overnight but sure "feels" like it when you finally step on the scale and you've gained 20 pounds.

There are multiple medical conditions that contribute to weight gain, as well as many medications...This is nothing new.....It's only "new" in tabloids and snake oil ads.

she's the only person I've met who has the condition so I'm not surprised by that statistic.

There is enough information these days that medications like steroids (which are mostly used short term) and depression meds MAY cause weight gain...

If you recognize this beforehand, than you can alter your diet and up your water intake to help prevent any weight gain.

I've had to do multiple rounds of steroids over the years due to my 3 cervical fusion surgeries and associated pain and have easily managed not gaining any extra weight.

Many medications will cause fluid retention as well as cause more cravings of carbohydrates. Working with your Dr. and making sure you drink 12-15 glasses of water a day as well as only eat complex carbohydrates, and lessen or eliminate any sugar and simple carbs. Along with getting at least 45 minutes to an hour a day of exercise, this should help any weight gain.

My point is that it's not "inevitable" that people gain weight....it's a possible side effect just like all the other ones listed. There are simple and effective ways to avoid this.

blake, you're surprising me with your threads about womens' weight. Usually it's the fat chicks that fabricate these excuses.
