That's why I have said work with your DR....I am not suggesting that anyone follow my advice on here....

(I'm not sure what you are referring to when you are saying something OTC as I didn't mention a medication at all...I'm speaking against that...)

I am going on what is suggested for when there is possible weight gain with those medications....That it can easily be solved most times by cutting simple carbs and upping their water intake....

My point is that there is not need for any other medication to take to "lose weight" because of being on steroids or anti-depressants.

I don't consider drinking water and eating complex carbohydrates a "life changing" plan.....

Drinking water and eating more complex carbohydrates is recommended to most every person to live a healthy life...(It's not a fad diet)....We consume close to 75 POUNDS of sugar per year on average....As well as people usually do not get the recommended daily amount of water they should...

***Again....I am NOT a Dr. as I stated....I'm just speaking of weight gain and going the natural route....(WITH YOUR DR.)....is always ultimately better than taking another "pill" to combat this.....that was my point....
Ingy,
The OTC remark was not directed toward you.

I contend that for some people - those who are excessively overweight - eating a healthy diet full of complex carbs and modest amounts of protein and eating modest portions is absolutely a life changing event. Were they doing those things in the first place, they wouldn't be overweight.

That said, there are people who are taking medication that will interfere with a diet and exercise plan that works for many other people. In addition, they may have health issues that preclude or limit their ability to exercise.

To your point about the amount of sugar in the average diet: many people don't think about or realize the amount of sugar or HFCS that is contained in the foods they eat. I live currently in the midwest, and it is shocking how many people think they are eating right, and they have no idea how much sugar is in the foods they eat daily and why instant grits or instant rice is so much worse than long-cooking original grits or 45 minute brown rice.

I am kind of tired of hearing people summarily conclude that overweight people are lazy and don't want to change (you have not done this). There are many reasons that people don't understand how to be healthy - one reason is that they have never learned the basics of good nutrition and healthy calorie intake for their metabolism and activity level. And, you're right. Fad and misinformation is not going to help.

I wasn't trying to jump on you, but your post leaned toward sounding like it was a one-size fit all approach. I hope I didn't offend you.

Thank you for explaining more....I definitely wasn't trying to say there is one solution at all....Just one thought to speak with their Dr. about if starting to gain weight on steroids, seizure/nerve pain medication, or anti-depressants as "sometimes" it can be helped by a healthy intake of water and limiting simple carbs/sugar from their diet...

(Emphasizing for others who read this)....

I think all of us, minus the OP, are saying to TALK WITH A DR. if having any issues with medications or just regular weight gain to formulate a plan suited to them to help them going forward.

NEVER take the word of someone on the internet and start taking even OTC meds long term (label or off label) without consulting a Dr.

I have been on the end of gaining weight from a medication. I was always quite thin and then I was put on a med for anti anxiety and I was quite shocked when in 6 months I gained 50 pounds. This made my anxiety go up and I was very unhappy. I had my doctor take me off the medication and it has since taken over a year to loose just 30 of the 50 unwanted pounds. I feel that people cut me out of possible matches because I am slightly over weight, what they don't know is that I am still working very hard to fix this problem. Wish it was just as easy to loose the weight as it was to put on!

I don't think these 'possible matches' will care how much effort you're putting in - you're just a profile on a computer screen - they have no emotional attachment.

I don't know how tall you are, but I would have thought you would have realized it much sooner than 50 pounds.

As Steve said people reading a profile won't know, and if you mentioned it on your profile would look at it as an insincere excuse. Most guys are looking for how a future partner is rather than how she could change to be in the future.

Also, 20 pounds overweight is not "slightly overweight" four or five pounds is.

It's easier to lose track of weight than you might think. It's also a lot easier to lose it than people say.

After thinking about it I realized I'd gained weight because I'd given the tv in front of my elliptical to my daughter, as well as the scale, since hers broke.

Those two ridiculous things actually caused a lifestyle change.

You do give good advice about what to eat if you're not weighing yourself, Tango. It works much faster than you say though.

I'd advise people to PM you about it.

Of course I realized it before the full 50 lbs had been gained, I brought it up to my doctor but he kept telling me not to worry about it that as I was on it more it would go away. 50 is where I said enough was enough and said take me off it.
