I'd disagree. I know professional athletes who are in long-term relationships with each other, and that has to be 10x harder than the "friendly competition" of amateurs or social players. Again, competition and poor sportsmanship are different things.

An ideal relationship will involve two people who complement each other well, which would mean more cooperation than competition. And hopefully we're not talking about win-at-all-costs competition. Good response. There are even marriages where the people involved are into the same sport. Tennis, speed skating, and ice skating come to mind here. Maybe being involved in the same sport gives them a deeper understanding of each other. For touring pairs skaters there has to be something great in order to be around each other almost 24 hours a day.
