One year, we had a real "Charlie Brown Christmas Tree". It was so dry, it had lost most of its needles before Christmas. There were more needles in the vacuum cleaner bag than were left on the tree!

We took it down the day after Christmas, and while we were removing the ornaments, I saw something high up in the tree. It was a perfect little grass bird's nest, about 4 inches across. I took it out and showed my mom, and she said that it is very lucky to find a bird's nest in your Christmas tree. Supposedly, a nest in your tree brings great happiness and good fortune.

We put the nest into a box, and we take it out every year and put it in the Christmas tree. I don't know if the "magic" works, but it's now a tradition with our family Christmas tree. We've had the nest for about 25-30 years now, and it's still intact. And, we never would have found it if we didn't have that "Charlie Brown Christmas Tree"!

I have far too many fond Christmas memories to to pick one, but I do have a funny one that I will always remember. Four years ago, my children and I went and cut down our Christmas tree. After we had set it the stand and I had put all the lights on, it was time to decorate. As we were hanging ornaments on the tree, my daughter screeched out "there's a bat in the tree".......sure enough there was a bat hanging upside down (looked like it was sound asleep) from a branch in the tree. After taking many pictures (there was even an ornament hanging next to the bat) I tried to scoop it up in a net, which I failed to do on the first try.

For the next 45 minutes, I chased the flying bat around the house trying to catch it in a net, I then put it outdoors. My kids love telling everyone about out our "Christmas bat"

And that's why I need a man! To deal with flying rodents and icky creepy-crawlies. A ring simply ensures that in sickness and in health, he will be there to dependably wield that broom...even after a bad argument...secure in the knowledge that I will thank him appropriately when the scare is over.

Actually, a ring gives no such assurance.

What does - at least as much as anything can be assured - is to be a desirable partner, with the health and talents to attract other desirable partners.

And there is no need to chase a bat. Wait till sunset, and open a window and turn out the lights. Admittedly you're wasting heat, but the bat should find it's own way out.

I have neither a talent for bats nor the temperament to idly wait one out until sunset...in a drafty house. Besides, his cousins might fly in to keep him company when I open the windows.

We have a memory-turned-tradition in our family and it's one we all look forward to every year. Even my niece and nephew are in on it now. lol

I can't remember how old I was when it all started, but probably somewhere around fourteen or so. My grandma was coming to our place for Christmas, but she wasn't going to arrive until Boxing Day (December 26th for those who aren't Canadian), so she would miss opening presents with us. I had a flash of brilliance () and suggested doing a Christmas stocking for her and having a second sock for all of us too, since we would be having our stockings on Christmas Day. Everyone thought it was a fine idea, so that's what we did, only we had to look for stuff for our "Second Socks" around the house - any knick-knacks we could find would do. We even recycled our chocolates and stuff from the day before. It was actually pretty fun and we all enjoyed opening a stocking with Grandma.

Now "Second Sock" is one of our favourite traditions. We don't look for stuff around the house anymore, but put a five dollar limit on gifts for each other that will fit in a stocking. We usually do Second Sock anywhere from Boxing Day to New Year's Day, though it's most often been the latter in recent years.

When I was a little girl, our big extended family would gather on Christmas eve and Santa would come around to check up on us... to check his list one more time because he was on the fence about some of us being naughty or nice! My dad was the one who was Santa, and as we got a little older we wised up and wondered why Dad always was in the bathroom and missed Santa's visit! One year, as Santa was waving goodbye on his way down the stairs to head out the door, his pants fell down! Oh my gosh what a panic to get Santa's pants back up! I don't think we quit laughing until New Year's! Heck, I'm laughing just thinking about it now!

We continued the Christmas Eve Santa visit my entire life... eventually my brothers took over the duty, and there were new little kids (cousins, grandkids) to be in awe of Santa making a special trip just to check up on them! Even after Mom and Dad passed away 6 years ago, we kept it up with some substitute Santas (a Jewish ex-boyfriend played Santa for us one year!). The last year we had Santa visit, my (then) 18 year old son played him! We haven't had a Santa the last two years, and a big part of my Christmas still feels like it's missing. Someday, when I've got grandkids, I hope Santa will start visiting us again.
