I've never seen anyone hold back on telling the schedule, and I can't possibly see the big deal. You have a kid, I have a kid, if you want me to be able to plan dates and time with you, you need to cough it up.

I agree. Never pre-judge. Custody situations can be complicated.
Find out what the real situation is when the time is right and proceed from there.
