I just started back up with okcupid and I was browsing though guys in my area around the age of 26-36. One thing I have noticed is that most of the guys look much older than their stated age.

Now, I don't believe for a second that the majority of these men are lying about their age. I am, however, wondering if I am just really bad at knowing what a 26-36 male looks like or if I'm just encountering a lot of people who really have let themselves go (accounting for looking older than they should).

Or, is it possible that the 26-36 range are the "bad" years for guys and they start looking better once they start in their 40's? I mean, everyone says guys age better than females but not these guys.

So, does anyone else encounter a lot of matches who look a lot older and aged then stated or I'm I just out of whack with my perceptions?

I posted something similar on here last week. I thought to myself "Do I look that old too?!?!?" (I'm looking at the same age range as you)

I always thought I was good at knowing who was around my age, but many of these guys aren't it. Some of the photos looked 10 years old. Others, not only did the guy look older, but his style was more of a middle age man style.

It would be sad if there are that many guys lying about their age.

I don't think these guys are lying.

As an experiment, I took a look at guys from 37-42. I thought these guys looked much bettered aged and more along the lines of what I'd expect a 37-42 year old to look like.

I'm starting to think that 25-35 is just the time when guys start to age from boy to man and many of them don't do it too well because they don't care about grooming like women do.

I just think as people get older they know more how to play up assets. Remember that 25 year old that looked like a nerdy 18? At 30 he looks like a put together 22 year old.

Remember, looking younger doesn't necessarily mean they are more attractive.

Also, as people age the range of how old people look is huge. My dad still hangs with they guys from his high school class. They are in their late 70s now, and looks range from late 50s to 80s. He went to high school in LA. Now heading back to the college reunion in Indiana, his class mates looked much older.

For grins, when I first signed up on Match I searched on all the ladies in my area that were within 2 years of my age (49 at the time). The ladies ranged from looking in their 30s to looking in their 60s. For the men I didn't run across really young looking guys, but 10 years younger to 20 years older was the range.

I think men in their early 30's look very similar to men in the 35-40 year age group. I see more difference in a 40-year-old man and a 48-year-old man.

Like others have said, it's kind of all over the board. Some guys look quite young, some about on target, & some do look quite old. It's like that irl too. As a nurse, I often see people w/ chronic ilnesses who will tend not to age well. So I guess I am kind of used to people looking much older than their stated age.

I also checked out the competition by looking at women in my age range - and same thing. Some of them looked so young. But some of them looked very old & stodgy.

Age is just a number for the most part.

Some people age real well, others look decades older than they are.

It also depends on what people are wearing, grooming, and for women the make-up they have on.

If some people have been in the sun a lot they will look much older.

Overweight guys with beards can add a decade to their perceived age.

I disagree that age is just a number. Regardless of how you look on the outside, your body is still aging in the inside. It is very important to me to be with someone around my own age because I absolutely do not want to play nurse maid to a guy 20 years down the line.

And, weight usually makes people look younger, not older - in my experiences.

Tough choice for women then, gain weight and look younger or be slender, and look like a hag.

Smoking & sun exposure will also add years.
