My work experience, eons ago, started legally as soon as it was legal (16) and included retail counter at a donut shop, waitressing at a rest home, hostessing at a large restaurant, gift wrap and seasonal retail at large department stores, working the arcade at Knott's Berry Farm, driving double decker buses, and minor programming. Once I graduated from college I had a real real job, in software engineering.

As for my daughters. My youngest has been working at her barn helping with camp since age 12. At this point she is almost 17 and trains horses and teaches private lessons.

Her sister danced, and her only job before college was very occasionally helping with dance camp. However, once in college she found summer jobs at the front desk in the dorms, and then doing office work and designing promotional materials for a small company, and then newspaper layout, PR for the health services, etc. Whatever it took to be able to spend summers there instead of home. She just graduated this month, and has a full time real job in advertising.

Interestingly enough, even in this economy, most of her friends had jobs waiting for them when they graduated. Some were more entry level than they were hoping, but they were all pretty much employed.

My first job was as a cashier at Winn-Dixie while I was in high school. I think I was 15, but I could be wrong because that was a long time ago. Before that, I babysat.

We had to work for our allowance from the time my mother went to work when I was in the 5th grade.

Teenager...I started baby-sitting.

Once I was an Easter Bunny. Dressed up in a costume, worked a shopping center, passing out candy to the kids.

Got a job right out of High School, thinking I didn't want to do school anymore. Worked a year full-time...and thought that wasn't much fun...

...so I worked part-time and went to college; had my own apartment too. In those days you could do that. Did three years...when I dropped out and got married. The day before we got married, my husband got laid off...so I went to work full-time again.

Never did get beyond my Junior year.

Working full-time did enable me to retire early...well before 50. I haven't worked in over 10 years now...and hope to never have to work again.

It was the summer before I entered HS - I was 14 and decided to answer an ad in the paper to work at a local convent. I was their cleaning lady for two summers in a row. I washed floors, toilets, polished furniture, dusted, etc. Before that from around the age of 12, I babysat around the neighborhood. My first full-time job was at 19 after I finished a tour at Katharine Kibbs School, and I put myself through college part time while I worked.

My daughter who is now almost 23, began working when she was 15 for a local landscaper/garden center. She has always had part time jobs during the summer and worked part time throughout college. She is currently looking for a full-time job in her field, but the economy STINKS and her degree is in psychology. She plans to go to grad school but wanted some time off to gather her thoughts and take a deep breath.
