If you will indulge a momentary digression... scientific experiments have revealed a surprising connection between physical symmetry/attractiveness and other positive traits. It's not what most people would think either.

There is this idea that attractive people skate by on their looks, while the more plain must develop character. The studies, however, have shown a surprising correlation: People judged to be of high physical beauty consistently scored higher on tests for intelligence, emotional stability, interpersonal skills, and moral development!

At first read, it sounds like I'm saying that pretty people are better people; and indeed some of the researchers proposed a genetic combination that somehow provides both looks and character. A sort of genetic lottery winner.

The consensus now, however, is quite different. People who are 'better people' are prettier. This correlation results because people with all of those other characteristics are almost universally attractive to the opposite sex! People who are smart, stable, personable, and ethical are much more likely to take care of their body, maintain good hygiene, have a personalized sense of style in their dress and affectations, possess self confidence and charisma, and in general everything else that makes a person attractive.

You don't have to be a prisoner of your genes, if you improve your character, your attractiveness will follow.

Maybe not to everyone... but to the people who matter.
I read the same study (or one like it)...the study also stated attractive people got better jobs, and higher pay....but now a new study states attractiveness may get you in the front door, but aggressiveness and mean-ness gets you the promotion and accelerates one's move up the corporate ladder. However, the study may be a bit skewed because another study stated that some fields like engineering, stock analysts, research, and computer tech do not rely on 'looks' but brains/ability. So, an attractive person in a field where looks matters needs to be more aggressive and mean to get ahead (not looks alone will help), and a not so attractive may not need to worry about his/her looks if in a field where brains are more important. I need to find the studies...it was an interesting read, indeed!

I read a study where the good looking women were at a serious disadvantage when it came to even getting in the door. Why? Because the assistants in the HR offices are typically young pretty girls who feel threatened by those women. Even when they would be in completely different departments.

I have also heard the "meanness" theory on advancement. I think this works better in larger, corporate situations, not small businesses.

I think sometimes stating that you want certain advancement opportunities can be a bad thing. If there is no room for your boss to go, they might think you want their job!

Hmmm, is this thread now off topic?

Also, if you are in one of this thread's less preferred groups, if someone agrees to your offer of a date, be a good date. There are things within our control falling under the category of character, personality, fair-mindedness. To state this reality is common sense, not negative or jaded.

Great Post!
I think it is very important that I am honest in my profile.
I don't have pictures of me from 10 years ago posted on site.
I don't lie about my age. (47)
I'm 5' 8".
I admit that I have "a few extra pounds", and that I'm not perfect.
