And the very interesting thing is: we don't know the ages of people we meet in person, at work or in the community, and yet we will happily socialize with them and even date them before finding out their ages.
I've also noticed that in general, people aren't all that good at guessing ages. Sometimes they are so far off it's laughable. (Like the kid who carded me for wine, and then stared at my id for a good 2 minutes at a concert recently. I may not look 50, but I have to look way over 21...)

I know of at least instances where man/woman lied about their age on eHarmony.

One was an older man who put himself as being 10yrs younger because he wanted someone who was as active as he was. They have been together for five years now though they went through a rough patch when she found out what his actual age was.

In another case, the woman lied about her age by a little less than a decade. She found Mr. right. Things were going very well until he found out her age four months into the relationship. He walked away and she is still trying to figure out how to win him back.

Maybe people shouldn't be forced to disclose their age online and the matching be based on other criteria.

Criteria such as age tend to matter to people. Those to whom such criteria don't matter can just set their parameters wide enough.
