Ladies, is it jut me or are guys (including myself) as dumb as rocks? I can have a great time talking to women that I do not know in supermarkets, parking lots, bars, sports venues, wherever. I always note the left hand (force of habit), after some engaging generally humorous chatting, I toodle off and go my own way.

Several times I was with female friends, who abused me for missing the subtle hints that the ladies were sending me that the were interested. Had they interrupted me or specifically told me during the conversation, I would have certainly asked for a phone number or e-mail address... How come I can't see, smell, or hear the signals?

Is it just me or most guys? Enquiring minds...

A nice guy might be too afraid of offending a woman these days. Especially if they express interest in a place which is non-conventional for meeting potential dates?
... Just a guess.

I think we're in a day and age that is very socially minded. It's common for strangers to have conversations with it meaning nothing at all.
I don't blame you for not getting the signals. I've talked to numerous people with no intent to further engage them, just being social.

Its pretty common ...women are impossible to read.

With me I will naturally have the conversation with the woman who is "unavailable" for various reasons if there was a room of women.

We need a clearer system.

I can't tell often times if a man is flirting with me and my men friends tell me that they can't tell when someone is flirting with them.

It's a wonder the world's population is standing at 7 billion. You'd think we'd be in threat of extinction!

That is well stated, Howard.

I have the *exact* SAME problem, and could use some enlightenment here.

Political correctness run amok, concern for their safety, plain decent manners and common civility, setting one's self aside from the far-from extinct knuckledraggers, (a very unendangered species that hit on ANYTHING in a skirt), having some exclusive boyfriend already but WITHOUT the ring, etc etc could be reasons also...

It's definitely just you. Sorry.

Becasue all the supposed "signals" may reflect nothing more than a specific woman's personality, and are thus not necessarily a dating signal. Also, using them might not in fact be interest in a specific man, but may be used to get that man to respond - to validate her sense of desirability, for instance.

In every workplace I've been in, there have been a number of women who exhibit often the "dating signals" typically referenced: smiling, coming closer, fiddling with her clothes or hair, touching me. I have a hard time believing that many women were interested in me (especially considering that it's at work, and, in most cases, we would have been clearly incompatible.) It's easier to believe that is just their personality.

So, anything short of a clear spoken statement is ambiguous.

The point here which you are missing entirely, is that it is up to YOU, to suss out the ambiguity, which is the WHOLE point of this discussion.
