There is a thread in the What makes us tick? group discussing this. I offered up us lefties who were raised as righties as nurture can make you go against your hard wiring.

Maybe Serenity will take a look at this and give guidence. He has some pretty good links to studies that show nurture has a lot to do with who we become. Our debate was more around gender stereotypes not physical differences of the adult brain.
I don't know that it's the physical structures they are talking about so much as the patterns of neurons firing, as seen by an MRI.

It gets pretty complicated, but some of the research suggests you can change the wiring say after a traumatic accident where part of the speech center was affected. Over time some patients are able to co-opt other parts of the brain to take over a new function.

I never did read the book the OP is based on. How your neurons fire shouldn't be a gender issue. I think I need to go back and see if there are any posts I missed cause I am rather confused at the moment.

Okay so I went through and didn't miss anything. The idea I got from the book, what I read, was that hormones and such caused the differences. I think you are correct in that the part of the brain you use gets larger because you use it.

I don't know, I do think the book is just waffle.

It isnt about the firing of the brain cells. It starts with invitro and how even after birth girls and boys brains are being formed by hormones. Which causes more growth of certain areas of the two different brains.

I was responding to Nightling's post. She said it is about neurons, that was what I was confused about.

Maybe I should find the time to read the book so I can tear it apart properly.

I see I worded things poorly ... of course the neurons each fire the same way. lol

What I meant to say is the pattern of their firing as seen on the MRI can be different based on gender ... those purty little pictures in lights.

But whether that's bc they were nurtured to use certain parts of the brain more than others or bc of some innate biology they were born with or a little of both ... I don't think that question has been settled by any of the research I've seen.
