In one of my fun classes with undergraduates, I have been observing a poor soul try to romance a rather pretty girl. Being the realist I am, I knew he had no chance with her. You can tell from the interactions, it is one-sided.

Today, in class, the girl brought along with her a prospective mate. The guy was the typical guy girls her age look for. She introduced the unrequited to lover to the prospective mate and oh God did I see a heart break. Never saw one before actually, but as the young are prone to put their emotions on their sleeve, well it was obvious he was distraught.

Poor guy is all I have to write.

He'll write all the better for it; but poor lamb will be crying himself to sleep tonight.

Heartache is somehow growth for the soul but stunts every other fibre of our being.

I'd say tell that poor guy to do some push ups, maybe lift some weights and walk it off. Effe the girl, go clubbin on weekends and you'll be as good as new (minus hangover) by Monday!

Unfortunately youth is wasted on the young. Wish I would have had the sense to see what was in front of me at that age.

Dude Py_2, I think only you and Sassafras understand me. I really wanted to mentor the kid, like my older friends mentored me at his age. However, I don't think he is open to it. I have the feeling he is adamant about this one girl and there is no talking him out of it. I'm sure once he's my age he will see that it really is not a big deal, but until then I'm afraid he would only take it as an insult to his pride were I to intervene. Sometimes, you just have to let people go down their own path and hope for the best. I'm sure he'll be fine.

You're right--it's none of your business and your wish to "mentor" him I'm sure would serve to only embarrass him publicly about something I'm sure he thinks is private and nobody else knows in that class. He will be fine eventually. Why do you want to meddle so much in someone else's life?--that's the real question.

I have to say, you write the strangest commentary about other posters responding in your threads. First I see you out of the blue asking twice if someone is mad at you (for no reason I can see), now you're saying only two people understood you (they all did from what I see), one of whom didn't even post here? I don't get it.

Poor guy? What about "poor girl?" She needed to bring along another guy in order to get the creepo to leave her alone.
