I promised to update: it seems that it is possible, in the right circumstances, to get my guy to say similar things about any ethnic group, not excluding those of his own parents. So he's just a little bit of a misanthrope. That I can deal with!

(Now if I could only change his attitude about dogs.)

This is why I am hopeful that--despite MrFlyer's statement that reasoning can't win this kind of argument--I have a chance to sway him, because I am pretty sure that nobody else has even tried. And I can be persuasive. His stats are casually derived, shall we say; he knows them from the media. And I can, bit by bit, provide non-biological alternatives to at least some of the examples he throws out. I could do so to all of them, given time! But, not having a superabundance of free time, I will pick my battles wisely.
I'm also doubtful that you'll be able to change his opinion. When people selectively choose which 'statistics' to remember and support their position and which first hand accounts to base their opinion on.....they're usually just looking for a way to justify an emotionally predetermined opinion that isn't honestly based on facts. The 'facts' are just an excuse to believe what they want to.

Well said.
And like stuckonyou, I too would recommend J. Diamonds "Guns, germs and steel" to him.
