Men die off much younger. The ratio reaches 1:1 sometime in the early 20s. (At least in Canada it does)

Add to that the fact that guys are more likely to be ghey than women, and women are at a definite disadvantage.

If one is already happy being on her/his own, what is wrong with being picky?

I'm not picky at all in regards to physical traits. Will date short men, bald men, overweight men (although not obese), I'm game for anyone. I just want to enjoy their company. I am picky in regards to intelligence. I just have always dug really intelligent men - gets my motor running!

Men don't live as long on average due to men doing more dangerous jobs and activities. How many female cops and soldiers get killed in the line of duty? Not nearly as many.

When you take those factors out, the lifespans are much closer, especially for men who aren't involved in dangerous activities.

Is "ghey" some oddball way to spell "gay"? If so what is your statement there based on?

I'm not disputing that men tend to have higher risk jobs. I was simply answering Jo's question as to why women aren't inundated with offers given that more boys are born than girls.

Of course, those high risk jobs don't really explain why they ratio evens out by the early 20s when people are barely into the work force. It's not just the jobs that are killing guys. Accidents are a much larger cause of mortality for boys than for girls, largely because boys are more likely to engage in higher-risk activities.

But again, the reasons for it, or the fact that life span is more equal if you take certain occupations out of the equations, doesn't change what the numbers are - i.e. for the vast majority of our dating life, there are more women than men, not vice versa.

And I didn't think you could say gay on these boards. now I'm wondering why we've all been avoiding that word if it doesn't trip the mod bots lol

I don't have specific stats at my fingertips, but any figures I've seen in the past indicate that men are more likely to identify as gay. I've seen numbers that list the disparity as high as fourfold. When it comes to same sex couples who are cohabitating, the numbers are closer (54% vs 46% in Canada), though there are still more male couples than female couples. However, the imbalance is greater when you look at those who identify as gay (as opposed to those who have just experimented) because men are somewhat more likely to be in more casual relationships. What I learned in university psychology classes was that there is a biological reason for the male/female difference. Though admittedly, that goes back a few years, and I'm not sure what the latest scientific information is on that.

I think online dating is more hazardous to your health than some dangerous jobs out there!

lol if you think being picky is a hot button on this board...try "If you're a short guy you need to initiate communication and pay for dinner!" That'll get you 297 pages!
I guess in that sense I would be considered picky because I'm not comfortable dating someone my height or shorter - I'm 5'6". And if I also add in that I'm 5'8" with heels then I guess I'm really picky lol!

Other than height, I'm no longer into bald guys, esp bald guys with goatees, because somehow they all seem to remind me of an ex-boyfriend I'd really rather not be reminded of It's kind of like another thread about not wanting to date someone with the same name as your ex, yep that applies here too! We became friends while working on a project together and he made it clear that he liked me more than just a friend. But I wasn't attracted to him at first, not because he wasn't attractive, but because he wasn't the "type" of guy that I'm usually attracted to - he wasn't bald at first though, he ended up shaving his head after the first year we were together. So really for the first time ever, I ended putting aside the fact that there wasn't this great attraction/chemistry on my part and gave a relationship with him a chance. Well after 3 years, he turned out to be the worst bf I've ever had! So maybe there is something to being a bit picky?

Anyhow, I'd like to think that it's more that I have a certain type of guy that I'm usually physically attracted to - taller than me with brown hair, brown eyes But of course if a guy
physically attracts me and he's ignorant, racist, violent or an alcoholic/addict, those are pretty much deal breakers! Oh yeah and someone who can make me laugh is a definite plus
