I think everybody here pretty much has "high maintenance" covered- at least to my definition. I think the materialistic high maintenance is merely a side effect of emotional high maintenance, however. That kind of person needs constant affirmation and attention in the form of material things as well as having their egos coddled to maintain their emotional health.

Certainly agree, and it's pretty common at a variety of ages.
I'd also add in the self-centered hysterical, fully disinterested in self-management.

And I think we've left out that "high-maintenance" types really like "control", with "drama" usually being the weapon of choice....

Special Snowflake Syndrome. The world revolves around them because they are special and unique in their own way and you need to bow down to them because they are so special.

I completely agree with Wonderwoman's sister-in-law fitting the bill. (your Brother must be a saint not to boot her)

But i'd add in a person who needs constant reassurance that everything is ok. A person who bases their self worth on what others think of them. And a person who depends on you to bring them happiness.

Basically, Insecurity=High Maintenance

Drama, drama, drama. The world revolves around them, and if you make the mistake of not knowing that, you'll learn--very quickly. If you give them a gift, it had better be the best, because if it's not, you're not going to get a bit of gratitude; instead you're going to hear about how so and so's boyfriend/husband got them a bigger diamond or a nicer bracelet or a much more beautiful sweater or WHATEVER. They are extremely needy, and when you give they want more and more and more.

They just don't seem to get that there are other people in the world who genuinely need more than they do, and who genuinely go through bad times in their lives where they might need some support, too. They don't understand the concept of compassion or giving of themselves. They know self-love, but they don't understand how to love others. In a way, I feel sad for them, really.
