...rather than being any kind of universal reflection of mens preferences in women.

Besides, who knows what her husband really thinks!
True. Most guys I have dated asked me out because I seemed nice and they found me reasonably attractive. Once they started realizing I had a working brain, you could almost see their eyes light up. Most of them (not all) were thrilled!

For a lot of men, a smart woman is very sexy. And I honestly wouldn't want to be with a guy that felt uncomfortable with it (sans arrogance, of course).

When did asking questions become rude? I don't ask questions that I know the answers to. I call it interest. I call it conversation Most people complain if a guy doesn't ask any questions and take it as lack of interest.
wasting people's time is always rude. doesn't matter how it's done, like asking questions you know the answers to. that's just another way of not caring.

I wonder about peoples intelligence or if they even read the post. NOT ANYTIME were questions asked that the answers were known. These are questions with general interest and wanting to learn about the topic of conversation. Pay attention.

THAT was an intimidating response, and would shut me down.

Not all of the responses are to your particular posts. It's like a group conversation where another relevant viewpoint is brought up and discussed as well. This idea of asking questions when the answers were already known was an idea posted by others in the thread.

The condescending attitude may be more of an issue than the intelligence.

girl, YOU pay attention. this is an internet board. that's a place where generalised discussion occurs and the conversation goes where it will. frankly, "questions" weren't even mentioned in your OP. i made a generalised comment on a possible aspect of the generalised situation. as a matter of fact, my adressing the generalised subject of dumbing down was what your OP specifically asked for.

and btw, stop wondering if people read all the posts in a topic. this is an internet board. they do not, and it is neither required nor expected. if you need intellectual background on the medium, start with Marshall McLuhan.

There were a couple of comments about how rude it was to ask questions that I knew the answers to. I pointed out that it was not the case and I asked questions because I was intersted in the conversation so when it kept coming up and it had nothing to do with the post it was irritating.
Never heard of Marshall but I can spell generalized

i was waiting for that. you are pretty transparent. check your dictionary and try to remember that the U.S. is not the only english speaking country - that it is not, in fact, where the language originated. there is more than one way to spell "generalized."

and btw, if this has been an example of your "refusing to dumb down" - maybe you should try it.
