I am very honest about myself and the person I portray to be online, but this may seem like a trivial point for some of you ...

I am a smoker ...or, at least, I was up until about 3 weeks ago. I'm trying to quit. In order to do this, I purchased one of those electronic cigarettes ...they produce nicotine water vapor with no harmful second hand smoke for others and no tar and additives for me. At first, I was still smoking tobacco occasionally - after meals at home, mostly, but haven't touched a real cigarette in a couple of weeks now.

Do you (smokers and non-smokers alike) consider this "smoking"? The dating site I used only allows for "often", "occasionally", and "no". Right now, I have it set for "occasionally" knowing that it is still possible for me to backslide and have one ...plus, the electronic cigarette doesn't really do anything for the nicotine addiction, just the eliminates the harmful effects of tobacco.

I want to treat this as any other smoking cessation device and change my status to "no" which opens up a lot of doors, obviously - (and, no, that's not why I'm quitting), but I also don't want to be in a situation where I'm meeting someone new, whip out my electronic cigarette, and be called a liar.

Opinions?

Is there somewhere in your profile that you could provide this information? Just something that says you are quitting smoking and use a device to help you.

And good for you! I know it is a hard process - my dad gave up after many years of smoking - but stick with it, it is so worth it. Best of luck!

I've heard about those electronic cigarettes. I wouldn't consider it for smoking so would put a "no" on your profile.
Bravo to you for quitting.

I'm on the fence about whether to consider this smoking, but I applaud your efforts and absolutely wish the best for you!

(I am very not only anti-smoking but also anti-nicotine, because while it's the second-hand smoke that damaged my own health, it was the addiction to nicotine that caused it... and killed close family members before their time.)

Congratulations on your decision to quit! That's fantastic, and I wish you the best.

Your desire to be more specific about your situation is commendable and a real plus in demonstrating the type of person you are, overall. How about adding a quick note in the "additional information" section of your opening profile page? You can answer "no" on the smoking question, but then use question 13 to explain that you've started on the journey to being smoke-free, can't wait to be totally rid of tobacco but are using the electronic option to reduce the habit. You might also want to update it regularly to indicate your progress. You're being honest and forthright with your smoking status while giving your matches a chance to know and ask about the situation.

I used "no smoking" in searches and in the requirements I listed on my profile (doesn't seem to matter for me anyway - the women in my age group aren't smoking anymore.)

I have no concept of what an "electronic cigarette" looks like, but if it is awkward over a meal, or drew attention to my date, I would call that a large issue. In any case, the need for it is what starts to make it seem like an addiction.

I think it is best to leave the profile saying "occaisional smoker" until more time has passed - and you are able to complete the time with your partner without thinking of smoking.

Also, I would think about whether there is cigarette smell in your house or car - which could be a problem for some people, and make them feel deceived.

The only way I would put down "no" is if you stopped cigarette smoking completely. Otherwise there might be a few people who would comment and say, "it says you don't smoke but yet, here you are doing it." I wouldn't put no, until you don't do it at all anymore. So my answer is occasionally.

But like the rest of the posters, I applaud you for trying even though, I think it takes a while to stop any habit completely. My dad used to do the occasional cigar. And then, even decided to stop doing that. So, good luck!!

Personal opinion is that if you never use tobacco products again in the next 20 years then you may then put "No" for smoking. But you best mention that you were a smoker and give details on how long it has been since you quit. At this point you are a smoker who is trying to quit and you have been at least temporarily and partially successful. Nothing more.

Until you are totally free from nicotine, you can't really describe yourself as a "non-smoker". It's too easy to pick right back up with cigarettes until you have learned to live without nicotine for some time. I say this from experience. I quit smoking for 3 years several years ago, but started up again. Since then it's been an alternating series of smoking and not smoking while doing nicotine replacement. 3 months ago I decided it was just time to quit nicotine altogether and it's been amazing I haven't missed it since. Exercising definitely helps. But I still bring up the fact I'm a 'recent' non-smoker on first dates. I don't think I will ever pick up cigarettes again, but other people should know. I can tell you first hand even being an ex-smoker is a deal breaker for people--they have been burned before.

This is a very good observation.
