I was in the check-out line at the grocery store. Groceries all on the counter. The guy behind me keeps trying to tell me something. I had to ask him three times, because he was a mumbler, but I finally made it out. He said "This is the line for 15 or less; you have 20 or so things there. It's too late now, but I thought you should know."

I looked up above my head. There it was, plain as day. 15 or Less Items, on the sign hanging from the ceiling. Yes, folks, I was in the wrong line!

I told him I was sorry, that I hadn't even looked, but I don't know that he believed me. I even considered putting all my things back in the cart, but the checker was already reaching for the first item.....

Luckily, I am one of those customers who will help bag their own groceries, so I was able to avoid any more contact with him and beat a hasty retreat, with as much dignity as I could muster.

So, people, here are my questions for you:

Did you ever get in the wrong line yourself?
Did you do it deliberately, or inadvertently?
Have you ever counted somebody else's groceries?
Did you ever tell somebody they were in the wrong line?
How did that go?

The story does have a Happy Ending. I'm out at the car, loading groceries into the back, when another guy comes along on his way into the store, and asks "Shall I take your cart back for you?"

And just as I was thinking it was going to be a long Holiday Season, with somebody counting my groceries already.

I counted them myself when I got home, and it was closer to 25 than 20. So I guess the guy was within his rights!

Now, confess! Ever happen to you?

Yes
Inadvertently
Sort of
Yes
A lot better than I thought it would, actually lol
They were in the express line with a really large full cart. It was painfully obvious.

They actually said a general "sorry" to the people in the line behind them (including me) and moved. It was in Canada though, we usually are just like that.....

Did you do it deliberately, or inadvertently? Both, I do get in the Express line with more items if there is no one in line or if I only have one or two extra.
Have you ever counted somebody else's groceries? Once but only because they were rude to the cashier.
Did you ever tell somebody they were in the wrong line? No way! Life is way too short for that kind of stuff!
How did that go? N/A

I am glad the story had a happy ending! I can't believe the guy made such a big deal out of it!

I thought this thread would be about getting in the line that may be shortest but actually takes the longest that is what usually happens to me. The person in front of me usually is paying with pennies or has three items that need to have price checks!

yes,I have gone in the wrong line, not deliberately,
I am always counting and commenting..when it looks like someone has way too much.
told more than one person they were in the wrong line,
this usually does not go over well. You must be careful whom you confront these days!!

I would purposely try not to get into the wrong line in this scenario, but I have seen a lot of people do it on purpose just because the other lines were "too full". Tough cookies, I say. It's an express line for a reason. I don't want to have to wait 10 minutes because you refuse to follow the rules on purpose. This is why I can't work retail. The customer is sometimes wrong and I'm never afraid to tell them so when opportunity is presented.

I would never intentionally get into the express line. One day at Wal Mart I realized I had gone into the express with too many items and started to back out. The clerk told me to come ahead. Must've been a slow day.

Something similar happened to me a few years ago. I used to take my elderly parents to doctor appointments and I always kept a handicapped placard in the car for such times. I had dropped my parents off at the front door of the hospital then went to park in a handicap spot. I hung my placard on the rearview mirror and as I got out of the car, a man in other vehicle questioned if I had the authorization to park there. I pointed to my placard in the window. Kinda thought it was none of his beeswax! I know thoughtless people do park where they ought not to, but I don't figure it's my place to question them. By the way, my parents are both gone now and I still have said handicap placard. Very tempting but nope, never use it.

Yeah. I guess things can always get worse. I could have been in the line for 5 or Less, Cash Only!

I always thought that shortest, longest line had my name on it! I should have known something was wrong, when I got the line with only one person ahead of me. And all she had was a 12-pack of Coke. She didn't even bother to put it on the counter...

You know, Sucia, I did wonder afterwards if the only reason if mentioned it at all was because I was a woman. He was a real mumbler, and maybe he'd have let it go if I was the big, burly type!
What is your Avatar, BTW? It's beautiful.

Thanx, all, for posting here. I'm going to sign off now, and maybe try to dream up some more trouble to get into tomorrow!

Well....not really a "wrong line" but more of a "wrong place" scenario here...

I was in Macy's and had my crying (screeching...she was teething) baby in a stroller, my unruly toddler and my 8yr old in tow. We had been shopping most of the day and were all tired, aggravated, and worn-out. It was a very disheveled day for me!

I passed the kids to my sister and dashed into a bathroom in the store, but when I looked up... to my chagrine (and most obvious embarrassment)... I was in the men's bathroom. Not at the doorway, mind you...but all the way in the bathroom heading for what I thought would be a stall...wasn't paying attention at all when I walked in with my head down tryng to maneuver packages and get my coat off. I remember saying to myself once I looked up "Hey..this bathroom looks strange" before I realized where I was...You should have seen the look on their faces when I inadvertently walked in on them....PRICELESS!!!!

LOL (but really NOT funny...I still shiver when I think of such a dumb faux pas I made that day...I always pay attention to the bathroom signs now!)
