I've just been to brunch with my friend. The waitress sat us right next to, what must have been, a fairly new couple, they were really into each other. I'll admit that the mutual face touching was a little embarrassing (their's not mine!) but over all I thought.....

1) I have done this. I have been one half of this public display team in the past, they do not even know that I am here. I should cut them some slack. Good for them, what does it cost me?
2) This is hopeful. They are around my age. They are falling in love and it's palpable. If it can happen to them then it could happen to me.

However my friend's reaction was

1) Billious. She found their behaviour entirely objectionable and anti social in a public place where people were trying to eat.
2) She resented having to witness such lovely dovey behaviour when she is so unhappily single.

So I wondered, does being around love and lovers provoke a positive or a negative response in you?

When I was much younger I might have acted this way once or twice, but now that I'm older I've developed this thing called tact. I'm okay with tasteful PDAs, but I think it's important to be mindful of others; afterall, when people go to a restaurant, their intention was to have dinner, and not dinner and a show!

If a couple is loud, or otherwise impinging on me, then I don't like it.

That people have varied cultural / social backgrounds, and display such differently than is my norm, is not, in and of itself, reason to react negatively.

Kissing, a few times, over dinner is far more acceptable public behavior than bringing a noisy child into a restaurant.

I see people doing-it in the park when I'm out dog-walking. I figure they're exhibitionists. It's creepy. I feel used...unwillingly made a participant in their sex life.

Lots of restaurants have tables very close together ... that would be a bit much, to be 2' away from someone engaging in foreplay. But if they were say 10' away, no prob.

And I like seeing people being affectionate, at a little distance, and no private-parts touching.

There.

Positive, but wistful. I miss that. I want to BE part of a couple like that!

I would define my reaction as manic-depressive than positive-negative.

Manic that they are so happy, depressive because I wonder what is so wrong with me that I can't seem to find it.

Yeah, I agree, it was my friend's strong reaction that made me think about it. I'm not proud of it but I've been there and in all honesty, as embarrassing and distasteful as extravagant public displays of affection are, I would have bloody loved it to have been me today!

I bet they're not home with a cup cake and a lap top right now.

You should have changed your table and that's the end of the problem.

Personally I enjoy young lovers enjoying each other especially, since we have so many over the hill types like your friend that no longer enjoy the thrill of it all!. But on the other hand lust or the lack of it improves one's appetite!
