We just had this discussion in our office and I was curious to see what folks here would say...

You find a $20 on the ground in a public place. What would you do?

You find a purse with cash in it - but no wallet or other form of ID. What would you do?

You find a wallet stuffed with cash, with ID in it. What would you do?

You find a canvas bag stuffed with cash with a bank's name across it. What would you do?

You find a $20 on the ground in a public place. What would you do? Have no clue what money you're talking about.

You find a purse with cash in it - but no wallet or other form of ID. What would you do?My first thought would be.. want a dumb thief! Took the wallet and dumped the purse that had cash in it. I would survey the area, ask people nearby. If there were retail stores/shops close I would ask them to hold it. in case anybody came looking.

You find a wallet stuffed with cash, with ID in it. What would you do? If the persons home was nearby I might drop it off there. Otherwise bring it to a police station.

You find a canvas bag stuffed with cash with a bank's name across it. What would you do? .RUN!!. dont want the exploding die pack messing up my clothes..or is that just in the movies?

Treat ourselves to a couple of nice pastrami sammiches.

Ask around and leave my info with the store clerk and take the bag with me. If someone can ID the bag, it's theirs. If not, lucky me.

BTDT. Look up the person and call them.

Call the bank and get the typical runaround voice mail jail. If they want the money they can call me.

You find a $20 on the ground in a public place. What would you do?

Years ago I once found a $20 on the ground outside of a shop in a mall. After thinking about what to do, I went in and talked to the clerk and said that someone had lost the $20 and might come back for it. Of course that didn't happen (and there was no way to match the bill with the previous owner, anyway), so I went back and reclaimed it at the end of the day...lol (these days, I might direct it toward one of my charitable projects...).

You find a purse with cash in it - but no wallet or other form of ID. What would you do?

A purse is more likely to be missed and claimed. I would either take it to lost and found (if there was one in that setting) or ask the police what to do with it...

You find a wallet stuffed with cash, with ID in it. What would you do?

Contact the owner, of course (whether it contained cash or not...). There are usually lots of hard-to-replace items in one's wallet (license, photos, etc.) that are much more of a hassle to replace than the cash (depending on the amount of cash, that is...).

You find a canvas bag stuffed with cash with a bank's name across it. What would you do?

I like CaptCrunch's answer...lol. (I would contact the bank and/or police, of course...and then have some daydreams about what I would do with the money if I had kept it instead...lol)
Responses above...

Pick it up and put it in my pocket. Statistically, whoever lost it is getting a subsidy from my tax dollars, and this is likely untraceable.

Keep it. Unless this is in a confined area, like a workplace, there is no way to definitively prove ownership … in any case, same logic as above.

This happened to me an eon ago. My mother called the guy – who came to get it and subsequently gave me some cash. Hey, I was a kid! Today, I am not sure. I have lost cash, and had enough other misfortunes and unfair adversity that I expect I would keep it. Karma owes me.

Same as above, really. If I thought I could get away with keeping it, I will sleep peacefully. Life is unfair to you, best to be unfair back to it, or you lose.
Same as the above.

$20...ask around the immediate area. If someone claimed it, I'd give it to them. If not, keep it.

All others to the local police station.

I would keep the $20, but I'd return the other items. My profession makes me hesitant to toe the ethical Mendoza line in most cases, which was my choice so I can live with it. I've actually found a wallet with about $200 in it, when I was around 20 yrs old. I returned it and the owner gave me $20.

As for the purse, that would depend on where I found it. If it were inside a public place or other place of business, I would be compelled to find the security desk (or equivalent) and turn it in. If I found it in the middle of the woods and there was no reasonable way to identify its owner, I would keep it (the money, not the purse ).

The bank canvass bag, to me, is a no-brainer. I think the Treasury Department has evolved from yesteryear, and if there's a bag of money which has come directly from its depository they probably have some way of tracking it down, whether it takes one day, one month, or one year. And once they find out my profession, things won't be too pretty.

I found a purse with cash in it but no ID once in a shopping mall, and took it to security. They were able to return it to the rightful owner by simply asking the woman who came looking for it to describe it, and to name the amount in the purse (it was a $100 bill, which we also returned). Pretty simple, really .

Keep it. If I lost it, I would be aggravated (with myself), but wouldn't expect to get it back.

Like others have said, I would try to find somewhere to turn it in. If I lost my purse, I could easily describe it to claim it, and I expect any woman could.

I would absolutely contact the person and return it. If that wasn't possible for some reason, I would take it to the police. I had my purse stolen years ago. There was very little cash in it, but it had my id, social security card, lots of personal stuff that I hated to lose, plus it was a very expensive purse. About 6 months later, there was a knock on my door one afternoon and it was a city employee with my stolen purse. The electric company was repairing lines and found it in a field. The money was, of course, gone but it made me feel so good to have my trust in humanity restored.

Take it to the bank. Didn't you ever see "It's a Wonderful Life"?!?
