Hello everyone...I'm in South Texas...near Corpus Christi.
Thanks for asking, vedalisa! Yes, she is home (for just over a month, until it's time to go to college). She enjoyed her dig immensely. She worked at 4 different sites: three 18th-cen. plantation houses, now in ruins, in southeastern VA (Fairfield, Rosewell, and one smaller house with a name that's still unknown), and she had an unexpected opportunity to dig at Mount Vernon for two days! It seems that a new museum/presidential library is being planned for Mount Vernon. The folks there knew of a Virginia archaeologist (the professor my daughter was working for) who had a team of interns available to come check the proposed site of the library. They found little, but did find some evidence that there may have been a small forge there about 1000 yards from the blacksmith shop that is already recreated adjacent to the main house. Since blacksmithing at Mount Vernon is already being interpreted there for the public, it's doubtful that this small additional find will impact the construction of the new building.

The most interesting part for her was that she and a grad student together located the site of one of the outbuildings at Fairfield, which will now be available for further excavation. Maybe next summer.....

Grace...that sounds incredible. I am such a history buff and the thought of uncovering relics of the past is amazing. I'm glad it was a good experience for your daughter. God Bless you all.

Would it be fun to make this a kind of riddle?

1. My home is in a small city that has been a test market town for many products.
2. International headquarters of a large Earth moving equip. company.
3. Richard Pryor's hometown. Town leaders knew he was a brilliant comedian, but had a hard time acknowledging him because of the profuse profaneness he was known for. There is a blvd. named for him now.
4. Nancy Brinker and her sister Susan G. Komen grew up here. Nancy started a race in memory of her sister.
5. The old vaudevillian phrase, "Will it play in ............?" ends with my hometown's name.

There's more.......but I think this could be enough hints to do the job.
