I guess the thing that upsets me the most about society's expectations for men with these hideous gender roles is how badly it affects men.

This idea that men have to be strong hurts men and boys.

For some reason society thinks is if you have a member that you can function without assistance. And you look at young boys paying the price with high rates of suicide compared to girls.

Sure, when people complain that girls are harassed and are struggling in school, we jump to their needs. Meanwhile, fewer boys are going to college and many struggle far worse than girls.

And then you have grown men who were raised not to accept help. As one poster prior to this one "women don't like whimps" and "I like manly men". So what man doesn't want to be liked or loved? Unfortunately men end up killing themselves before asking for help.

It's even worse for men in the armed forces. How many of them return to the states to commit suicide because soldiers don't ask for help?

So if I seem a bit angry about all of this "be a man" stuff. That's the reason behind it.

Why should any man sacrifice just to make a woman happy? .
Ok lets flip that.
Why should any woman sacrifice just to make a man happy?

I dont know many women that wouldnt put their needs aside to meet the needs of their partner, child, mother, father, grandparent ..etc.

This attitude you seem to have toward women in general is very worrisome to me. I dont even know you but I'm already worried about you.
I think that a person that uses the term 'real' just wants to have some one that will be honest and respectful and give their all at least 80% of the time. I mean who wouldnt be happy with 80%?

90% is Great! 100% is hardley ever found.

I always give 90 to 100% of my everything in a relationship.
I'd be estatic with 80% instead of the 40% I end up with.

Why judge some one for not knowing how to relay to you, in words, on a profile, what they really want in a partner?
Just my 2 cents.

How does a "REAL MAN" contrast with one who is not real? Are you really just saying that cross-dressers need not apply?

A real man to me is someone who knows who he is and is comfortable in his own skin; is self-confident; who does what he says hes going to do 90% of the time and who says what he means and means what he says. A real man is emotionally mature and honest and has the ability to communicate his vulnerabilities and insecurities and who is aware of his strengths and his limitations. A real man has integrity and stands firm in his beliefs and his values and doesn't sway like a leaf in the wind and faces life challenges. A real man has the ability to be intimate and fully present and available. A real man wants a real relationship where he too is responsible and accountable and who is equally respondent, attendant, and nurturant to my needs and feelings as I am to his. A real man is GENUINE.

Pam here's a "real man" for ya:

"Faster than a speeding bullet!
More powerful than a locomotive!
Able to leap tall buildings at a single bound!

Voices: "Look up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane!
It's Superman!"

Announcer: "Yes, it's Superman, strange visitor from another
planet who came to Earth with powers and abilities
far beyond those of mortal men. Superman, who can
change the course of mighty rivers, bend steel in
his bare hands; and who, disguised as Clark Kent,
mild-mannered reporter for a great metropolitan
newspaper, fights a never ending battle for truth,
justice, and the American way."

Outlaws "what a real woman is"

1) She laughs at me when I try to con her or pull one over her eyes. She says things like "uh huh, come on, get moving!"

2) She's vivacious! Yes even below the blanket...

3) She sees right thru me but still loves me for the online profile I yam...

4) Born of Molten lava,* pine trees, grass, wind, Moon,
Sun, Water & Wolf Spirit,** she seeks me out as I seek her out.

5) She is an optomist, friendly, intelligent and prefers a man over batteries.

6) She's honest, open yet not a pushover. Mothernature breathes life into her soul. And she breathes into my soul, turning me from Wolf into human. I am fully alive because of her. And she is fully alive with me. Our two parts = a whole.

Without her I am a roving Wolf...happy, alive and on a mission.

7) Woman is the glue that hold villages together. She holds her head high and doesn't actively engage in negative gossip.

Thank you Great Spirit for letting me write this. For reaching many a maiden, some who live far away from my clan. I give tobacco to the four winds and pray for this to happen. I am at peace Grandfather.

*who doesn't like a "hot" woman?
**Red Hawk, Moose, Bear and other clans may apply

That is because it is supposed to be one of those unspoken things that is assumed to always apply.

Well, as far as I'm concerned, only a real man would know the answer to what a real man is. You don't have to lift a tall building before you leap it or anything. It's funny but I consider a real man to be someone who is Genuine (which I believe was mentioned here already). A guy who is constantly making up stories to fit situations so that he doesn't have to live up to anything he says, is definitely not a real man. He's a real pain. So anything opposite of that barring the scratching his privates bit, would most likely be some of what a woman would be speaking of when she offers this remark.

I know I've said it many times and when I do, I mean exactly that. I am not interested in meeting a guy who bashes women in any way or who is always talking about his ex in harsh tones, playing with stupid text messages every five minutes or consulting his buddies about every move he makes. I like independent people with intelligence and knowledge of intimacy and trust. I'm not saying he's gotta be perfect (who is). But what I am asking is that the guy just have some decency about himself and his approach or attitude about the opposite sex. Derrogatory terms to describe women are used by guys who are sexist and arrogant. To me, that's an immature person who is un-deserving of my attention (at least). That's why I specifically use the term "REAL MAN". But it's not the only reason. No man who is genuinely interested in attracting women, and really likes women who is desirous of having any interaction with them is going to sound off on the old "all women want is a free ride" or "women are just gold-diggers" deal. If you think that doesn't happen, think again. Unfortu-nately, it happens all too often. So I offer that a lot of women (as do I) think it's necessary to put a guy on alert, as if to say, "Don't even try it".

There are a lot of men who want a woman, but only for the obvious reason. They're not interested in establishing anything well, "REAL". Real meaning a sincere nuturing relationship. They don't have real, meaning honest intentions to begin with. Nor are their emotions real, meaning true. They, the un-real, meaning disingenuous creatures are only trying to be players and don't care whom they hurt in the process. I'm seeking an honest, decent guy who respects women and himself enough to have the backbone to say what he means and mean what he says. That's what REAL MAN means to me. If he's a fake, I have no use for him. I'm a very REAL person. I don't play with people's feelings and I hate it when guys do that to me.

Now, I'm sure it's probably just as frustrating for the decent guys (ok, REAL MEN) when they run into females playing games as well. I can't speak to that issue because I'm not in that category. So what's the big deal about a guy asking for a "REAL WOMAN" as well? Men get just as tired of a bunch of b/s from a bunch of fake women as we, women, do of b/s-ing fake men. Besides, if you never ask for anything of quality, you'll only end up with substandard equipment. Why settle for a hobby horse when what you want is a real stallion?

I would just say not a feminized metro or one that has no concept of chivalry. Biggest turn off EVER

Ok! LOL
Ya'll are funny as all get out, I just wanted to let you know that first.

Second.... I prefer the 'real deal' over batteries or plastic.

Third... We just want men that are honest, funny, kind, and loving.
(well thats what I'd enjoy anyway)

I think thats what women are thinking when they say 'real man'

I know I'd like to meet a man that is honest with me about everything and whom could make me laugh when I'm having a bad day. Someone who is kind and will think to do the little things and whom can show me love and affection.
If a man has those 4 qualities then the rest of what we need will follow throughout a relationship. (in my opinion)
