One of the most wonderful places I have been is a small town in Germany called Auw on Der Kill.. It literally translates into Auw on the Kill river. It was the most wonderful place I had ever seen. The river rolled slowly under a stone bridge that had been there longer then America had stood. The places where they had posted guards had indentions worn into the rock from countless years of hand and knees leaning into the rock. As I stood there and placed my hands in the correct spots and leaned my knee into it I felt the most incredible feeling of peace and history wash over me. I would have liked to have someone there who could have understood what I was feeling, who could feel the sense of awe of that moment. The connection between times.
Then again, maybe I am glad I didn't have the wrong person who could have spoiled it there. I do know someday when I have found someone, I think I'll take them there and let them feel the awe that comes from being with the past.
