One of my favorite custom questions is "how did you come to join eharmony?" I have gotten great information every time about what led people down this path and what they are looking to get out of it; I really like that question. And I totally agree about not using the canned responses - you get such a good sense of what a person is like when they don't just go down the list and check responses! I think you are right - if someone doesn't want to take the time to think up a sincere response, then I don't think they are serious about this and them closing at that point is just a time saver for you, since they are obviously not your equal!
