So I was wondering what my fellow travelers would say was their most inspiring and/or life changing place they have ever been to. I'll start and say that Burma (Myanmar) has been the most life changing place I have been to and seen. If you aren't aware of the situation in Burma, I'll fill you all in on a little bit, and then if you have questions feel free to ask me. Burma now known as Myanmar is run by a brutal dictatorship, and live on less than a dollar a day. I spent a week in Burma in the fall of 2006. I immedately fell in love with the country, culture, religion, and the people. They are the most geniune and giving people anyone will ever meet. They live every day in poverty and fear, yet they are the most giving of anyone in the world. I spent a week experiencing the culture while spending nights in a hotel that rarely had electricity, the toilet leaked into the shower, and it was extremely hot at night. I spent my days riding on a lake while the rain poured down and the wind blew, we froze and were soaking wet, but it was the best trip I have ever had. One morning the damn broke and we were standing in about 3-4 ft of rain water in the dark at about 5am, we had to walk through the water barefoot not to ruin our shoes although I caught something in my two big toes and lost both large toe nails to it, but again it was the best trip I ever had and it was the people of the country that made it that way for us. I'm still very close to my tour guide, and we still talk several times a week online (which is not easy being that internet access is hard to come by in Burma as is electricity) Right now they only have electricity about 12 hours a day. I have now dedicated a lot of time to the democracy movement for the country. It certainly changed my life, and I pray I can return some day. I would love to hear other's experiences.
