Hollywood is fantastic at delivering explosive action sequences, stunning visual effects and occasionally, a big screen romance so heartfelt it leaves you truly believing in the power of love! Here are ten of our favorite movie love stories -- in no particular order!
1. Ghost (1990)
Remember “Ditto”?! Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze’s love is so strong it continues in the afterlife, as his character is murdered and works through a psychic (Whoopi Goldberg) to protect his beloved. The winner of two Academy Awards, ‘Ghost’ contains one of the more famous movie love moments – the pottery-making scene -- as well as a shirtless Swayze, enough to make most ladies swoon for years to come.
2. The Notebook (2004)
A career-making role for both Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling, the epic romance is based on the novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks. It’s a classic tale of forbidden romance and torn-apart lovers who ultimately find their way back to each other. In a recent interview with Sparks, he tells us about the power of such love, “Above all, love is defined by what you do as opposed to what you say. Because in every life, there’ll be happiness and sorrow, joy and pain. And often it’s the support that is expressed through action that is most meaningful in both the highs and lows of life.”

3. Casablanca (1942)
Often noted as one of the best movies in cinematic history, ‘Casablanca’ earned three Oscars, captured Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman’s chemistry and unrequited romance and is known for its famous one-liners, like “We’ll always have Paris” and “Here’s looking at you, kid.”
4. The English Patient (1996)
The winner of nine Academy Awards, Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas prove that following your heart doesn’t always lead to happy endings, as their forbidden and dramatic affair leads to her death and his demise, ultimately becoming the English patient to nurse Juliette Binoche. Even in his final moments, he still dreams of Thomas.
5. The Graduate (1967)
Here’s to you, Mrs. Robinson! A different kind of love story, but just as memorable, is Dustin Hoffman playing Ben Braddock, a college graduate who gets seduced by an older woman and falls in love with her daughter. Who can forget when Ben runs out of gas, sprints down the streets of Santa Barbara, and steals Elaine Robinson right from the altar. Now that’s true love!
6. Titanic (1997)
The epic love story scored 11 Oscars, launched the careers of Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet and who can forget Celine Dion’s romantic anthem, “My Heart Will Go On!”
7. Moonstruck (1987)
Cher earned numerous accolades for playing a woman overwhelmingly love struck by her fiancé’s brother, played by Nicolas Cage. The movie is all about love, how messy it can get, and ultimately how it prevails for this couple, despite all of the odds and family members against them!
8. An Affair to Remember (1957)
Legendary leading man Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr star in one of the most famous tearjerkers of all time, which has inspired other big screen romances, including ‘Sleepless in Seattle’. The film is actually a remake of the 1939 film ‘Love Affair’ and is noted as being one of the American Film Institute’s greatest movie love stories ever made.
9. Forrest Gump (1994)
Based on the 1984 novel, Tom Hanks is transformed into Forrest Gump, the beloved movie character that literally goes incredible distances to deal with his love for the beloved Jenny (Robin Wright).
10. Dirty Dancing (1987)
Fans will certainly miss the late Patrick Swayze, who knew how to play a mysterious romantic lead so well! What girl hasn’t envied or wished she could be in Jennifer Grey’s shoes as the two practiced dance steps and engaged in a secret love affair? ‘Dirty Dancing’ is a dreamy, modern day fairytale where the bad boy has a heart of gold.
Honorable mentions … new and old!
‘Twilight’ for the tween crowd , ‘Gone with the Wind', ‘Say Anything’ – because John Cusack will always be the ultimate romantic for holding up that boom box and blaring Peter Gabriel’s In Your Eyes, 'Love Story’, and ‘WALL-E’, as far as animated, robot romance goes!
