As Hollywood’s most glamorous night approaches, it’s tough to get away from the constant coverage of film stars and what they wear. Have you caught your man mooning over Cameron Diaz or overheard your sweetie and his friends expressing appreciation for Salma Hayak or Diane Lane? Chances are you’ve got your own celebrity crushes as well, but wouldn’t mind some of that awe directed at you! Before you scour the town for an imitation of the dress Kate Winslet is wearing, take a moment.

To get to the bottom of what the essence of star quality is and how we can capture it (and his heart) in everyday life, we sat down with Patty Fox, Fashion Coordinator for the Academy Awards® and best-selling author of the Star Style book series. Fox is also Chief Creative Officer at myShape.com, an online fashion retailer that matches you with clothing that fits your measurements, reflects your style, and flatters your body shape.

The stars have teams of experts helping them look camera ready. How can the rest of us capture A-lister glamour without a personal stylist?

Fox: One hallmark of celebrity is having a recognizable “signature style.” To capture real star quality you need to understand your own personal style and consistently dress with that in mind so it becomes a “signature” style—one that is distinctly you. Finding your own personal style also imbues you with comfort and confidence—which work like pheromones on the opposite sex.

The everywoman equivalent of the Red Carpet is probably a black tie wedding or New Year’s ball. When it comes to formalwear, what should women look for to capture star quality?

Fox: Eveningwear throws many people, since it’s a rare occasion and they may be tempted to step out of their usual daytime style or compelled to try something that doesn’t fit their signature look. For example: if you typically opt for tailored style but choose something romantically ornate for evening, it will not be a successful look.

Most celebs have nauseatingly perfect bodies. How can a woman with a little extra hip action or a small bustline get an Oscar-worthy look?

Fox: Dressing for your specific shape is about understanding proportion. In general, use extra fullness or embellishment to counter-balance your widest area. A full hip looks for a dress with visual width at the bodice and/or shoulder. A few ways this can be accomplished with bright color, horizontal line or print, off-the-shoulder flounce or extended, sculptural cap sleeves. For a small bust, add inches by soft gathering and drape in the bodice. Brighter colors can also help.

How can a couple coordinate clothing to look as picture perfect and captivating as, let’s say, a Brangelina or a Tomkat?

Fox: A couple can coordinate by being in the same genre of dress (from classic to rocker) as well as a similar color family without wearing the exact same colors. So as an example, if he is in a navy suit with purple-toned tie, she could choose anything from mauve to a slightly different purple. The result is sophisticated but not forced—you’ll achieve an easy coordination that projects ease in your relationship.
