Judging by the blitz of drugs and treatments that claim to enhance the libido, boosting the sex drive is big business. Of course, this is nothing new. People have been trying to rev up their sex lives with aphrodisiacs since long before Viagra hit the market. Aphrodite, the goddess of love and sexual rapture, has lent her name to the culinary agents that increase sexual desire, chemically triggering something “down there” that gets us going.

So, are aphrodisiacs for real or are they just legends? Well, you’ll have to read on and try them out for yourself. Then let us know.

Vitamin Vigor

There is some science wrapped around these stewards of seduction, as specific nutrients have proven to affect our mood and functionality. Pine nuts are rich in zinc, a key mineral needed to maintain male potency. You might want to pass on the marinara in favor of the pesto on your next date, for some extra zing.

Also, pineapples are rich in vitamin C and are used to treat impotence, but the analogous relationship of the hard-to-penetrate skin and the super-sweet insides adds to the allure. Hot chilies and curries release loads of endorphins, creating a temporary high. Chilies also contain capsaicin, which increases circulation and stimulates energy.

Scents-ual Seduction

Smells provide a sensory delight that can have powerful associative powers. The scent and flavor of vanilla have long made it a fragrant love drug thought to drive men wild and increase lust. So there really was something to that Vanilla Fields drugstore perfume from days of yore. Garlic is believed to enhance virility, causing women to fall in love and men to become strong, like a bull. The breath, however, might present a potent challenge while you’re getting amorous, but hopefully your mate enjoys the strong aroma as much as you do.

Familiar Frolicking

Honey, a popular carousing choice, is one of the most powerful aphrodisiacs. Word to the wise with this sticky treat: avoid hair. Ouch! Red wine is also touted as an enhancement for romantic relations. It might have something to do with the deep red color or the cradled thin glass, or maybe it’s just the booze talking. Moderation is the secret, as too much of the stuff will make you drowsy instead of ready to go.

Potent Performers

Great taste is irrelevant when you are serious about being busy in the bedroom. Take the tiger penis, known for its properties of strength and sexual prowess. It is revered in some Asian countries, believed to make the man who ingests it the “King of the Jungle.” Soup, wine and tea are made from this wacky delicacy, ranging from $350 for a bowl of soup to $5,700 for an entrée. Available only in a few exclusive restaurants in the United States, such a delicacy must be reserved months in advance. However, if you want to make love like the Sultan of Swing, no price is too high.

A few tribes in India swear by rhinoceros horn. Although hard to come by, it is reported to turn men into unrelenting sex machines. Similarly, raw turtle eggs are also said to be an aphrodisiac. As you would with a tequila shot, just throw some lime and salt on them and you are in for a night of raucous romping.

Why we connect food with sexual appetite is up for debate. Sure, the vitamins can biochemically alter your state of mind. But the act of eating can be sexy in itself. It is also good for your libido, as many scholars deem starvation to be the greatest threat to the sex drive. Undernourishment dampens sexual desire, yet another reason why supermodels are so crabby. Eating together, especially when using our hands or dining on messy munchies, arouses the senses and primes the body for some touchy-feely. Now go have your cake, and eat it too!

Awwww Beloved, there you are singing my favorite song by my favorite man. Now THAT was a man who could turn a woman on with a smile. As for aphrodisiacs, I too, think my man, cleaned up, with my favorite cologne on, treating me tenderly...that's all I need.

Sooo.... I hope this article isn't advocating killing ENDANGERED tigers and rhinos for their supposedly aphrodisiacal properties. They already see plenty of poaching because men thing it makes them "the king of the jungle".... (though their skill probably just makes the ladies yawn...)

a meal cooked with love and care go a long way; the wine, flowers and candlelight as above are also important. Oysters Rockefeller and champagne have never failed me so far.
